ABOUT

Context: Our team was tasked with finding a way to make waking up an easier task, prompting our research question...

Users: While we based our research findings on college students, we intended this app to be used by all and promote using it in groups.

What’s something that we can create to make waking up a more enjoyable experience?

Solution: My group created Rise n’ Grind, a mobile prototype app that allows you to create and receive custom alarms to wake up to. This personalizes the experience and brings some joy or unpredictability to your morning routine.

FIGMA PROTOTYPE

In the video example below we have a basic run through of the app. We start from the login page and creating a new custom alarm for the family group, which will be randomly given to someone else as their alarm. Along with this, we are also going to be selecting the family as our random alarm group to wake up to. Enjoy!

PROCESS

In the start of out design process we had a lot of different ideas as we were a pretty diverse group of students. We started out with some more basic ideas of what route we wanted to go down, including physical objects like fans that blow at you to wake you up, or an alarm clock that actively runs away from you and you have to catch it. After some student interviews we conducted, a common theme we realized was…

Students begin to repeat days and it feels like a “simulation”, growing to even be “traumatized” by the alarm they wake up to every morning.

In response to these concerns we decided to reroute out idea’s completely and land more in the realm of a solution that could add uncertainty or playfulness in order to switch up the way people get up. So that students didn’t have to experience the same thing every morning which grows those feelings of repetitiveness.

KEY SCREENS

Working off of our Lofi Prototype we split up into two groups, some who would focus on the slideshow and then some who would work on the figma prototype. I was one of the people working on the protype and lead the overall look and feel of the app, we started on what key frames we for sure wanted to be a part of the app before we began connecting all of it and making it functional.

REFLECTION

After we connected all of the pieces and screen together, we presented our app design to our class and went over how we believe our design supports the motivation for students and people alike to have an easier more engaging time waking up. We believe we achieved this goal and it would really work at th problem question if people continued to engage with it on a regular basis as it’s heavily dependent on user involvement.

Otherwise, things I personally wish I could have developed further would be things like smaller features that would encourage increased/daily engagement such as things like streaks, friend challenges, prompt, ect. to add to the gamification and overall allure of the app. Since as it is right now it’s very bare in terms that the bulk of the fun comes from what people record for each other and how crazy they want to get with that. All in all this was an enjoyable group project experience where I learned a lot about figma and prototyping.
